An iSPIRA
creation.

— The project

iSPIRA is made from the names of Arca’s two founders: SPInelli and RAmpin. Damiano and Carlotta, eighteen years old, who want to tell the world what makes every animal one of a kind.

Arca is the encyclopedia of the world’s animals. Every entry begins with the name and where that name comes from: because the name of a species is the first thing a human being thought on looking at it.

It can be read two ways. By major group, the way a naturalist thinks, or in alphabetical order, the way you look for something whose name you already know. From any page you can search by pressing /: the search spans common names, scientific names, groups and habitats.

The entries are written by hand, one at a time, all with the same idea in mind: to arrive at the trait that makes the species impossible to mistake for any other. The photographs come from Wikimedia Commons and are credited to their source article. Conservation status follows the IUCN Red List categories, from the most reassuring to the most severe: LC, NT, VU, EN, CR.

It is a growing archive. Its structure is built to reach tens of thousands of species without changing shape.

Arca is free, with no advertising and no subscriptions, but the domain and the server have to be paid for. Contributing helps us keep it running and write more species, faster.
